1. Wall Art That Is Carved, Not Printed
One Solid Board, Not a Panel Assembly
Each piece in this collection starts as a single board of natural solid wood and is carved back into — the pattern is cut out of the timber rather than glued, printed or pressed onto a backing. That is why the grain runs continuously across the whole face and why the cut edges show the same wood as the surface. Explore the full Wall Art collection to see the carved forms available.
Depth That Changes With the Light
Because the relief is physically cut rather than shaded on, the piece looks different through the day. Morning light rakes across the ridges and throws long shadows; flat afternoon light softens the whole panel. A framed print cannot do this, and it is the main reason carved wood holds a wall on its own.
Hung Flat, Only Inches Proud
Panels stand just three to four inches off the wall, so they read as part of the room rather than an object sticking out of it. Fixings are concealed behind the body of the panel, leaving nothing visible from the front.
2. Reading the Carved Forms
Freeform Voids Cut Through the Panel
The most open designs are cut clean through, so the wall colour shows through the openings and becomes part of the composition. These suit a painted or plastered wall where the background is worth showing, and they read as lighter than their size suggests.
Vertical Wave Relief
Wave relief keeps the board solid and carves parallel ridges down its height. The result is closer to a texture than a picture — strong enough to hold a large empty wall, quiet enough to sit behind a dining table without competing with the room.
Organic Contour and Asymmetry
A third group is deliberately off-centre, with the carved mass gathered to one side. These work best where a wall is not symmetrical to begin with: beside a doorway, at the turn of a stairwell, or on the shorter wall of a long room.
3. Placing a Wood Relief Panel
Above a Console or Sideboard
Hung above a Console Table or a Sideboard, a carved panel finishes the wall the way a mirror would, but adds the same warm timber tone as the piece below instead of reflecting the room back at you.
In a Dining Room or Stairwell
Dining rooms and stairwells are the two places where a wall is seen from a distance and from an angle at the same time — exactly the conditions in which carved depth reads best.
Scaling Height to the Wall
Sizes run from 48″ to 79″ tall and 22″ to 36″ wide. As a rule, a panel should take up roughly two thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it; on an empty wall, the taller sizes hold the space far better than a small piece hung alone.
4. Why Choose Arboriswood
Solid Wood, Finished by Hand
Every piece from Arboriswood is carved from natural solid wood and finished by hand, in Brown, Walnut, Oak or Black Tone — each a surface finish over the same solid timber, so the grain stays visible. Because each panel is cut by hand, no two carry exactly the same pattern of grain and shadow. For freestanding pieces in the same language, see the Abstract Sculptures collection.
Made to Order, Made to Last
Panels are carved to order and sealed front and back, so the timber stays stable on a wall for years rather than cupping or splitting. Browse the complete Wall Art collection to find the size and finish that fits your wall.
